What is Haylage?
Haylage is a specialist forage for horses, a cross between hay and silage,
it is natural grass forage sealed in plastic wrapped bales.
Why feed Haylage?
Well made haylage is an ideal horse feed being high in fibre, dust free,
extremely easy to use, suitable for all horses and containing it's own natural minerals and vitamins.
The only disadvantage is that it requires a great deal of expertise to make good quality horse haylage!
Why Haylage over Hay?
Haylage contains higher quality nutrients than hay but because of its higher moisture
content the nutrients are more diluted.
How much Haylage should I feed my horses?
Feed horses according to working conditions. Each horse is individual. Depends on breed, size,
type so it is very hard to estiimate.
Care and Storage of Haylage
It is also important when purchasing the haylage to check the wrap or bag for holes, bird or rodent damage.
Any holes no matter how small will let in air and mould will start to grow well before it is fed.
It is important to store haylage in a way which will prevent the above occurring and it is essential that
a bale is used within four days of opening, if it is left open for longer moulds which you have sought to
prevent will start to grow again.
Is haylage cost effective?
Our haylage is a premium and quality product and very cost effective, for the following reasons:
- Haylage retains almost 90% of the nutrients and feed value of fresh grass and therefore will reduce your hard feed costs.
- Is highly palatable therefore you will get no wastage.
- Encourages fussy feeders to eat more, resulting therefore in better condition
- Has no dust or spores resulting in healthier horses and reduced vet costs.
- Can be safely stored outside freeing up valuable barn space.
